A warm welcome in a friendly family home:
We have one double and one single room with private bathroom. The garden is set on a hill, with fine views of the village and hills of Dartmoor. It has a secluded patio and a lawn for relaxing in, and sandpit and rope swing for children. Wireless internet connection available.
A low impact lifestyle is important for us; we use solar water heating, a biomass boiler, and have installed sheep’s wool insulation. We compost as much as possible, use local products, and support local businesses. A discount is given to visitors arriving on public transport, by foot or by bike.
From the door many footpaths give access to the moors and nearby villages. We are close to several walking trails including the Tarka Trail, the Dartmoor Way and the Two Moors Way. A network of country roads provide peaceful cycle routes to surrounding towns and villages.
Breakfasts:
A substantial breakfast is provided using local and organic produce whenever possible. We look for fairly traded products when they are imported, and buy many of our goods in our local village shop. Bacon, sausages and milk come from nearby farms. We have our own eggs and often our own fruit, and our bread is home-made from stone ground flour.
South Zeal:
The village has two pubs with lunchtime and evening menus, and local beers. A village shop and post office sells a good selection of produce, including local pasties, cakes and bread. The area offers a wide range of activities including National Trust properties, ancient castles, horse riding, walks and cycle rides. Riding stables and bike hire are available nearby.
Dartmoor:
South Zeal makes a great base for exploring Dartmoor, a lovely upland area of moorland with a wealth of archaeological sites including ancient burial mounds, stone rows, hut circles and stone crosses. Tin and copper were both mined on Dartmoor, and the remains of an old copper mine lie in the hill above Oakfield. The house was once a miner’s cottage and a footpath used by the miners in the C19th runs alongside the garden.
Public Transport:
A bus service connects South Zeal to Exeter where there are good train and coach connections to London and the north. Local buses make many walks in the area easy to plan. Further information available on arrival.
